Philadelphia, PA, Wednesday, February 27, 2002: Hemispherx Biopharma, Incorporated (AMEX:HEB) announced today that new clinical data on its lead investigational immunotherapeutic drug candidate, Ampligen®, will be presented on March 18th, 2002, at the upcoming peer-reviewed 15th International Conference on Antiviral Research, Prague, Czech Republic.
The expanded presentation of ``interim data'' (data from ongoing clinical studies) was reviewed and recommended to be presented by a Medical and Scientific Advisory Committee to Hemispherx, which convened on February 21-24, 2002. The blue-ribbon committee consisted of leading researchers throughout the US and Europe.
The FDA-Authorized ongoing phase II b Ampligen® clinical trials involve HIV/AIDS patients who either, a) have recently failed available therapies, or b) are at risk of relapse even though they are receiving the optimal care (called ``HAART''). The clinical trials, designated AMP-719 and 720 respectively, and which were initiated in 2001, focus on levels of viral suppression, immunological changes (versus a control group receiving only ``HAART'') and relative tolerance of the experimental medication after long-term administration.
The presentation, scheduled for March 18th, 2002, will be made by Professor William Mitchell, M.D., Ph.D., and internationally recognized researcher in AIDS who holds professorship in Pathology at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Nashville, TN. He is also a member of the board of Directors of Hemispherx. Dr. Mitchell received his M.D. degree from Vanderbilt University and his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD.
