Celdex

Chronix Biomedical
Alliance: CFS, Gulf War Syndrome, Hepatitis B & C

Hemispherx holds an equity position in Chronix, which is involved in research on Gulf war syndrome (GWS) and reshuffled genes. One third of GWS patients exhibit the symptoms of CFS as well as the 37-kDa marker. The management believes that a subset of the GWS patients share a common disease pathway as CFS. Both the companies are in discussion with the department of defense to explore the potential clinical benefits to the GWS victims. Hemispherx has the rights to any therapeutics and diagnostics developed by Chronix for CFS, Gulf War Syndrome and Herpes infections. Hemispherx's technology, derived from examination of CFS Patients, is applicable in a number of disease categories.

Hollister-Stier Laboratories LLC
Alliance:  Contract manufacturing of Hemispherx’s experimental drug, Ampligen®

The achievement of the initial objectives described in the Letter of intent (LOI), in combination with the Polymer production facility under construction in New Brunswick, N.J., will enable Hemispherx to manufacture the Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) for approximately 10,000 doses of Ampligen® per week. Based on the LOI, Hollister-Stier Contract Manufacturing has agreed to fill the Ampligen® API from Hemispherx. Production for significantly larger quantities of product are planned thereafter.

National Institute of Infectious Diseases, Tokyo, Japan
Alliance:  Avian Influenza

Hemispherx has signed a research agreement with the National Institute of Infectious Diseases, in Tokyo, Japan. The collaboration, by Hideki Hasegawa, M.D., Ph.D., Chief of the Laboratory of Infectious Disease Pathology, will assess Hemispherx’ experimental therapeutic Ampligen® as an adjuvant to the Institution’s nasal flu vaccine.

In a recent published study in the Journal of Virology (March 2005, p. 2910-2919), Dr. Hasegawa and colleagues found that double-stranded RNA (dsRNA), such as Ampligen®, increases the effectiveness of the influenza vaccine by more than 300% and Ampligen® may also convey cross-protection ability against variant viruses (mutated strains of influenza virus).

New data from preclinical studies on dsRNA, including Ampligen® supports the role of dsRNA therapeutics in improving the efficacy of the present standards of care in both influenza prevention and treatment of acute disease.
